Towards zero default in medical electronics design

Introduction

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs) are a prime example of how embedded systems design is driving innovation in the medical electronics market.   These life-saving devices, implanted in bodies of patients, take the concept of pacemakers a stage further.   Whereas pacemakers give out low energy electrical pulses to regulate the beating of a heart, ICDs detect when the heart’s beat becomes dangerously fast and give an electric shock to restore its natural rhythm (See Figure 1).   In turn, such innovation is driving considerable growth opportunities in the medical electronics industry.   According to a recent survey by Decision Etudes Conseil in Paris, the worldwide market for medical electronic systems is expected to grow in double digit figures over the next three years at a rate of 12% per annum.

DO-254 Users Group Forms a US Chapter, Affiliates with European Counterpart

The DO-254 User’s Group has just launched the U.S. chapter. Tammy Reeve, President of Patmos Engineering Services, a consulting firm specializing in DO-254 compliance, is heading up the group, which is operating as a sister organization to its European counterpart.

The DO-254 Users Group began in Europe in 2004, with the objective of having avionics companies and other stakeholders share experience and effort to address certification requirements, identify paths to improve tools and solutions, and so on. This initiative has been presented at the FAA SW&CEH conference in 2007, and the group is now composed of about 20 companies including equipment manufacturers, experts, tool vendors, and component providers.

The U.S. group has formed out of the success of the European initiative. Numerous companies, including designated engineering representatives, aviation hardware developers, airframe integrators, tool vendors, and FPGA vendors met back in August to discuss the formation of such a group. The initial meeting indicated sufficient interest and eagerness, which led to representatives from 16 companies gathering on January 14-15 in San Jose, CA for the first official meeting.

The European group has been working on a number of key issues, gathering knowledge from across the industry and developing suggestions for best practice compliance. The U.S. group also has identified a number of areas where they are beginning to work on clarifications and guidance for compliance to the RTCA/DO-254 document. The two groups will work together to share information and establish a common point of reference, enabling them to be an industry representative counterpart to both the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

“For years we have had U.S. companies asking to join and participate in our organization. Until now, it was not possible,” said Lionel Burgaud, Geensys Aerospace Business Unit Manager and chair of the European DO-254 User’s Group. “With the formation of the U.S.-based group, we can now share our learning across continents and help guide consistent practices and expectations within our own communities and certification agencies.”

"DO-254 compliance is required on more and more projects, and unfortunately, that can come at great expense to companies who find themselves unprepared," said Todd White, FAA DER and Avionics Certification Manager, L-3 Aviation Recorders. "Much of the expense can be reduced by simply clarifying ambiguities and establishing best practices for compliance. L-3 Aviation Recorders is pleased to participate in these efforts through the work of the DO-254 User's Group."

“Involvement in this group is essential to our efforts to better support the DO-254 needs of customers,” said Michelle Lange, Mentor Graphics DO-254 program manager. “By understanding the common issues and compliance process bottlenecks, we can focus on improving our tools to address these needs. When we do this, the whole industry wins as compliant development processes become more cost effective.”

The DO-254 Users Group in both Europe and the U.S. is made up of a select group of companies that have agreed to work together to invest time and resources to better the compliance process. Group size must be limited in order to remain an effective organization, and the group is dedicated to mature companies able to bring an immediate contribution and experience. Other solutions exist, both in Europe and U.S., to train and support those companies needing support and wanting to learn more about DO-254. Visit www.do-254.com for more information.

Geensys launches ASIM for AUTOSAR Builder

Geensys facilitates the validation and verification of AUTOSAR systems with launch of ASIM for AUTOSAR Builder

Enables design issues to be identified and addressed early in the development cycle

Paris , France - 3rd March 2009.   Geensys, the specialist provider of embedded development tools, value-added embedded engineering/consulting services and embedded software IP, has launched the ASIM simulation module for its award-winning AUTOSAR Builder tool suite.  ASIM for AUTOSAR Builder provides a comprehensive, PC-based solution for validating and verifying AUTOSAR systems early in the development cycle.  ASIM for AUTOSAR Builder will initially operate at the Virtual Functional Bus (VFB) and ECU levels. Network level simulation will be added later.

ASIM for AUTOSAR Builder’s VFB-level simulation capability facilitates the validation and verification of AUTOSAR Software Components (SWCs) independently of any hardware constraints and topology mapping.   It focuses on the higher level of functional behaviour of applications within the context of three layers of abstraction – the interface definition, behaviour definition and implementation definition.   For the interface definition layer, the ports and associated interfaces of an SWC that enable communication with other SWCs and underlying Basic Software (BSW) services are validated and verified.   For the behavioural layer, the “runnables” in terms of real-time properties and execution semantics such as scheduling, triggering and activation sources are validated and verified.   The implementation layer deals with the validation and verification of resource consumption.

ASIM for AUTOSAR Builder’s ECU-level simulation capability facilitates the validation and verification of specific ECU implementations as part of a hardware topology.  The use of AUTOSAR’s underlying standard BSW services, such as the ECU State Manager, the NVRAM Manager and the Communication Manager, by an SWC to fulfil specific tasks can significantly affect the functional behaviour of the SWC requesting them as well as highlight non-functional flaws due to implementation artefacts.   ECU-level simulation enables their impact to be thoroughly assessed.

ASIM for AUTOSAR Builder’s Network-level simulation facilitates the validation and verification of multiple SWCs and ECUs within the context of an entire system topology including network data.

“The launch of ASIM for AUTOSAR Builder solves the difficult challenges of validating and verifying an AUTOSAR-compliant system design,” said Pascal Gula, AUTOSAR Product Marketing Manager for Geensys.   “Most importantly, it enables design issues to be identified and addressed early in the development cycle improving quality, saving time and reducing costs.”

Abstract:

The Automobile Manufacturers and their Suppliers are now moving towards system-oriented industry best practices. However, to be effective and used as management tools rather than process constraints, such methods and associated tools must be agile and flexible in order to keep Automotive EE teams involved and synchronized. Definition of good requirements at system level is one of these best practices, but benefits are secured only when all actors are orienting and justifying their work in relation to these requirements. Innovative technologies and methods allow to design the requirements in both textual and graphical ways, using model-based implementations with automatic code and test generations.
To have all teams playing the game of requirements management and traceability is a challenge; the key is in a Process and Tool combination that can allow to get the information where it is available and relevant, and to make this information available for other teams and for management, with minimum extra-work. This paper pertains to a state-of-the-art technology developed with the aerospace industry and now deployed in the automotive industry; it also outlines elements of a visionary approach maturing in the Automotive EE segment which could well apply to other fields in the future.

Keywords: Requirements management, model based design, Traceability Automation, Impact Analysis, DO178B, DO254, ISO 26262, RIF, Quality Process, workflow, Reqtify.

InfoTech Consulting and Geensys in distribution partnership for Reqtify in Nordic region

InfoTech Consulting and Geensys in distribution partnership for Reqtify in Nordic region

Paris , France - 9 June 2008.   Geensys, the specialist provider of embedded development tools, value-added embedded engineering and consulting services, and embedded software IP, has appointed InfoTech Consulting as its Nordic region distribution partner for Reqtify, its flagship tool for the automated management of embedded requirements capture, traceability and impact analysis throughout the hardware and software development lifecycle.

In addition to providing in-depth sales and support services in the Nordic region for Reqtify, InfoTech Consulting will also draw on its extensive requirements management expertise to provide specialist consulting services to ensure the value-added deployment of Reqtify in real project environments and its seamless integration with customers’ existing tool chains.

“This is more than just a distribution agreement with Geensys, it is a partnership for the Nordic market,” said Anders Norberg, General Manager of InfoTech Consulting.  “Requirements-based engineering as a whole is moving towards adoption of the kind of intelligent and pervasive technology that Reqtify delivers.  It is one of the most agile requirements management tools on the market and we are very enthusiastic about the opportunity to open up the Nordic market to the benefits and value Reqtify can deliver.”

Reqtify is the most widely deployed solution for addressing requirements capture, traceability and impact analysis in the most demanding, safety-critical domains such as the aerospace and defence, railway transportation, automotive and medical instrumentation industries. It enables automatic and customisable document generation as evidence that a product meets certification and/or quality constraint requirements at all times throughout the development cycle.   Launched recently, Reqtify 3.1 includes significant new, user-requested features and usability enhancements, third-party interface additions and improvements, and a new RIF import/export gateway.

Thanks to its impact analysis and requirements coverage capabilities, Reqtify gives all project stakeholders a thorough insight into the effort required to complete each project task (specification, design, V&V activities, integration) and for each product release. It gives a unique and global view of the overall project status enabling project leaders and quality managers to perform risk analyses and to prove compliancy with project requirements and constraints.   With Reqtify, engineers can continue to use their existing working environments to fulfill traceability objectives. Verification engineers can link verification plans and results to both system and technical requirements assessments to prove that all requirements have been properly verified. Designers and coders can easily add traceability data within their authoring tools or directly in the code itself using their favourite IDE.   This way, everyone stays in their “comfort zone” with Reqtify acting as a “data broker” and monitoring the overall coherence against project objectives.   As a consequence, visibility of project metrics and final project quality are drastically improved.

“With this distribution partnership with InfoTech Consulting, our customers will not only benefit from localised support on Reqtify but also from the advanced services on requirements management that InfoTech is uniquely able to provide in the Nordic region,” added Olivier d’Arros, International & OEM Business Unit Manager for Geensys.    “The agreement also further extends the global reach of Geensys and Reqtify which we are achieving through the establishment of a variety of direct offices, OEM arrangements and distribution agreements.”

Geensys launches AUTOSAR Builder

Geensys AUTOSAR Builder

An Eclipse-based software development platform designed to provide a seamless flow for the creation of AUTOSAR compliant automotive electronics systems

Embedded World 2007, N ürnberg, Germany – 13th February 2007.   Geensys, a provider of design tools and consulting services for the development, implementation and test of software dominant embedded systems, has launched AUTOSAR Builder, an Eclipse-based software development platform that provides a seamless design environment for the creation of AUTOSAR compliant automotive electronics systems and ECUs.

The AUTOSAR standard provides the description formats for complete automotive systems including the resources and configuration for individual ECUs. It defines the methodology and tool support needed to bring the various description elements together in order to build tangible systems of ECUs.   It also enables both system-wide and process optimisation including the configuration and generation of the AUTOSAR Run-Time Environment (RTE) and the Basic Software (BSW) for each ECU.

To support the AUTOSAR process, Geensys’s AUTOSAR Builder provides an open Eclipse environment into which a suite of open-interface plug-in tools can be integrated.   Additionally, third-party AUTOSAR design tools can be integrated into AUTOSAR Builder’s environment.   The AUTOSAR Builder plug-in tool suite addresses the successive steps in the different phases of the AUTOSAR design process and enables engineers to easily undertake the various associated design tasks. The AUTOSAR Builder plug-in tool suite includes an AUTOSAR Authoring Tool (AAT), ECU Extract, Software Component Conformance Validation Tool (SCVT) and Generic ECU Configuration Editor (GCE).

The AUTOSAR Authoring Tool (AAT) – Based on a substantial subset of the AUTOSAR meta-model, the AAT facilitates the creation of AUTOSAR Software Component (SW-C), ECU and System descriptions at the applications level.   It represents the description data organised in templates and ARPackages.   For each AUTOSAR element the properties are shown in Forms and the Graphical Editor allows the elements to be displayed as diagrams as well as enabling the creation of new elements.   Rule checking of all standard descriptions for AUTOSAR systems with automatic error correction prevents engineers from entering inconsistent or invalid data and notifies them of potential or committed errors.   The AAT provides practical assistance to the user to realise the tedious task of creating AUTOSAR standard descriptions.

ECU Extract – This is a companion feature of the AAT which allows the user to extract a single ECU specific description from the overall vehicle description, in complete compliance with the AUTOSAR methodology and specification.

The Software Component Conformance Validation Tool (SCVT) – Functioning at the applications level, the SCVT verifies the description of SW-Cs.   It provides analysis based on description rules for SW-Cs, static analysis of application code and RTE code generated at the Contract Phase, verifying the coherence between SW-C descriptions and the associated code.   It also provides reports on the analysis/validation of the code.

The Generic ECU Configuration Editor (GCE) – The GCE facilitates the creation and configuration of Basic Software module parameters based on the AUTOSAR standard and methodology. It ensures strict conformance to the AUTOSAR specification and validation of all AUTOSAR rules and requirements.   The GCE is implemented as three separate plug-ins:   The ECU Parameter Definition (EPD) plug-in is used to create or modify ECU parameter definitions and can also be used to create XML format parameter definitions for any other software module other than AUTOSAR BSW; the BSW Module Description (BMD) plug-in is used to create or modify BSW module definitions and configurations, by BSW vendors; and the ECU Parameter Configuration (EPC) plug-in is used to create or modify ECU parameter configurations and to integrate BSW module configurations, by system integrators.

Commenting on the launch of AUTOSAR Builder, Eliane Fourgeau, Chief Operating Officer of TNI-Software said: “The AUTOSAR standard is opening the door to novel electrical/electronic development methodologies and tools as well as new business models where OEMs and suppliers will have to define collaborative development processes based on an open development tool paradigm.   AUTOSAR Builder has been developed to meet the design tool challenges laid down by AUTOSAR within the context of an open, extensible and fully scalable vendor-neutral environment that facilitates complete interoperability with third-party AUTOSAR development tools such as Run-Time Environment Generator tools and Configuration Generation tools.”
