Towards zero default in medical electronics design

Introduction

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs) are a prime example of how embedded systems design is driving innovation in the medical electronics market.   These life-saving devices, implanted in bodies of patients, take the concept of pacemakers a stage further.   Whereas pacemakers give out low energy electrical pulses to regulate the beating of a heart, ICDs detect when the heart’s beat becomes dangerously fast and give an electric shock to restore its natural rhythm (See Figure 1).   In turn, such innovation is driving considerable growth opportunities in the medical electronics industry.   According to a recent survey by Decision Etudes Conseil in Paris, the worldwide market for medical electronic systems is expected to grow in double digit figures over the next three years at a rate of 12% per annum.
